Maynard James Satrom was born in Page ND on March 25, 1938 to J. Palmer and Mabel (Olstad) Satrom. He grew up helping on the small grain, sheep and cattle farm. He started grade school in Colgate ND then graduated from Page High School in 1956. Maynard began his college education at North Dakota State University then transferred to the University of North Dakota where he received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Arts in 1961.
Maynard and Jeanette Loken were united in marriage on June 14, 1959 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Tower City ND. They started married life in Grand Forks where Maynard finished college and Jeanette taught in the public schools for two years. The couple then moved to Sheridan Wyoming in 1961 where Maynard was a Manual Arts Therapist at the VA Hospital. In April 1962 they moved back to ND and began farming with Jeanette’s parents. Maynard supplemented his farming income by teaching Industrial Arts at Central Cass HS from 1964 to 1968. They farmed until Maynard retired in 2011.
Maynard’s passions included spending time at Lake Ashtabula in the summer, hunting Elk in MT in the fall and winters in AZ. He also loved the farm and especially when the grandchildren and great grandchildren came to visit! While Maynard wasn’t an outright extravert, he never missed a chance to visit with friends. In these later years, he may not have said much due to Parkinson’s, but just being together is what mattered most.
Maynard also loved the Lord and one way he showed it was his service to the community and others. He was active on numerous boards and associations. This included twelve years on the ND Wheat Commission and ND Grain Growers Assoc where one of the highlights was a humanitarian trip to Russia in 1992. He also served as a member of the Oriska School Board and was a director at the First National Bank of Valley City, Evergreen Cooperative in Tower City and the North Dakota Winter Show.
Maynard passed away peacefully on December 8, 2022 with John, Kristen and Andrea at his side. He was preceded in death by his wife, a son James, a daughter Rachel and a granddaughter Amanda. He is survived by his children John (Amy) Satrom of Horace ND; Kristen (Garth) Lindgren of Oriska ND; and Andrea (Jon) Richman of Oriska ND; a brother Galen (Jo) Satrom of West Fargo and their children Brenda, Greg and Richard. Maynard was blessed with 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
The family would like to recognize the incredible care and support of Maynard’s home health care givers at Oriska and in Mesa AZ, the staff at The Legacy Place in Valley City and Hospice of the Red River Valley. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Hospice of the Red River Valley.
