Barry Mowl

Barry MowlBarry James Mowl, age 53, of Valley City, ND died Dec. 2, 2015 at his residence under hospice care.  Memorial Services will be conducted at 7 PM Wednesday evening, Dec. 9, 2015 at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home with Rev. Randall Schlecht officiating.

Barry James Mowl was born Aug. 2, 1962 in Flint, Michigan, the son of Gerald and Barbara (Smith) Mowl.  He married Pamela Uecker at Valley City on Oct. 14, 2011.  He had been an employee of the Valley City Times Record prior to his death.  He enjoyed music, he played bass, and he loved Air Force planes.  He also enjoyed NASCAR Sprint Cup racing and did model rocketry.  He loved meeting new people and making friends.  He will be missed by many.

Barry is survived by his wife Pamela, three sons, Cole, Kyle, and Connor, 2 granddaughters, Madison and Marley, and his father Gerald (Jerry) Mowl.

Levi Schopp

Levi SchoppLevi Schopp, 96, formerly of Jamestown and Lehr, ND, died Sunday night, December 6, 2015 at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, ND.

Levi Schopp was born January 19, 1919 on the family farm south of Lehr, ND the son of Jacob and Christina (Weisenburger) Schopp, Sr. He was raised near Lehr and attended the rural school. After his schooling, he worked on the family farm with his parents. On August 16, 1940, he married Sarah Lachenmeier at the Lehr Baptist Church and they settled on a farm southeast of Lehr. They lived on several other farms in the Lehr area until they bought a farm east of Lehr in 1956. He farmed there until retiring in 1979 when he moved to Jamestown. Sarah died September 11, 1962.

Survivors include 4 daughters, Shirlain (Don) Kramlich, Aberdeen, SD, Sherry (Darrell) Diede, Wahpeton, ND, Sheila Matthiesen, Jamestown, ND and Sheryl (Kim) Carow, Jamestown, ND; 6 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant son, Sherald; 5 sisters, Martha, Alma, Anna, Ida and Helen; and 7 brothers, Emil, Walter, Art, Rueben, Elmer, Adam, and Jacob.

Levi enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and both flower and vegetable gardening.

Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND with Rev. Randy Jaspers officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel.

Interment: Lehr City Cemetery, Lehr, ND.

Alvin Sieler

Alvin SielerAlvin Sieler, 89, of Jamestown, ND, passed away at his home Sunday morning, December 6, 2015.

Alvin was born on November 26, 1926, in Sutley Township, near Mound City, South Dakota, the son of Henry and Christina (Schaeffer) Sieler. He attended school in Mound City and then enlisted in the US Army. Alvin served during WWII in Hawaii and was honorably discharged. He returned to South Dakota and married Irene Alice Landis on May 5, 1950, and to this union brought five children. He worked in Selby, then Mobridge, SD before becoming employed at Kelly’s/Mardian’s Salvage yard. Alvin owned and operated Al’s Hide & Fur in Mobridge, SD where he enjoyed buying, trading, selling. He moved to Jamestown in 1971 and married Sally Issak on April 1, 1972. He worked for Country Boy Dairy, and then West End Hide & Fur. Alvin also drove star mail route for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, auto racing in his youth, driving motorcycles, and flying airplanes.

Alvin is survived by his significant other of 34 years, Elaine Englin; daughter, Carol (Bill) Vandenburg; son, Duane (Okcha) Sieler; daughter, Sheila Roettele; daughter, Becky (Kevin “Speed”) Dallmann; son, Ricky Jay Sieler; and daughter, Carol (Tom) Randall; 12 grandchildren; and14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sally; son-in-law, Doug Roettele; and all brothers and sisters.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Thursday, December 10, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown, ND, with Pastor Suzanne Orlopp officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Family will receive guests from 4:00 p.m., to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mertice Rood

Mertice RoodMertice Margaret Rood, age 88, of Valley City, ND passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 5th, 2015, at CHI-St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, MN.

“Mert” (Gilbertson) Rood was born September 12, 1927 to James and Ida (Kunze) Gilbertson in Valley City, ND. She attended grade school in rural Dazey, ND at Moore and Ladbury schools through the 3rd grade; she then attended St. Catherine’s School in Valley City, ND, graduating in 1945. Following her high school graduation, she went on to attend Mercy School of Nursing at Mercy Hospital in Valley City, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1948, also serving as a Cadet Nurse. On July 5th, 1950 she married the love of her life, Dan “Bud” Rood. They raised their two children, Dan Jr. and Stacey in LaMoure, ND. Mert worked at the LaMoure Community Hospital from 1954-1971, then went on to become the Director of Nursing at Colonial Manor in LaMoure until her retirement in 1988. She also taught CTE-Health Careers classes for LaMoure Public School in the early 1970’s.

Mert and Bud moved back to their home town of Valley City, ND in 1988 where she stayed very active in the community, volunteering at the Nearly-Nu and Mercy Hospital. She was an active member of St. Catherine’s Church, Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW and Legion Auxiliaries in both LaMoure and Valley City, ND. She kept a unique friendship with her Mercy School of Nursing classmates her entire life getting together monthly for lunch until 2014 when she moved to Sienna Court Assisted Living Center in Wahpeton, ND to be closer to her family.

Mert will be most remembered for her loving role as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She ended every conversation with “I love you” and will be greatly missed by her family and all those who were lucky enough to have known her.

Those she leaves behind to cherish her memory are her son Dan Jr. (Vickie) of Wahpeton, ND and daughter, Stacey (Paul) Knox of Bassett, NE; two sisters, Lucille Ratzlaff of Valley City, ND and Irene (Harvey) Wald of Pierre, SD; seven grandchildren, Dan (Megan) of Warroad, MN, Christopher (Tiffany) of Grand Forks, ND, Dr. Elizabeth (Patrick) Jahn of Thief River Falls, MN, Heather (Travis) Wiberg of Wahpeton, ND, Sarah Knox of Harvard, NE, Jeffrey (Courtney) Knox of Bassett, NE and Tyler Knox, of Bassett, NE. Mert also leaves eight great-grandchildren who adored their special “Nannie”, Marissa and Dan Rood IV, Madison and Carson Rood, Katilyn, Haylie and Allie Jahn and Westin Wiberg.
She is preceded in death by her husband Bud and her parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, December 11th at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Valley City, ND. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 10th from 5-7pm at Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home in Valley City.

Hazel Kunz

Hazel Kunz, 89, of Oakes, ND, passed away December 3, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes.

Hazel Mildred, daughter of Raymond and Amelia (Wagner) Featherstone was born March 8, 1926 at Oakes, ND. She was the middle child with six brothers and one sister. Hazel graduated from Oakes High School in 1945. Her studies were interrupted during World War II when she went to work in the shipyards in Michigan. She later moved to Washington, where she joined the USO as a tap dancer.

Hazel married Gerald Kunz on October 16, 1946 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Oakes. They had two daughters, Lorraine and Nancy. After Jerry’s death in 1987 Hazel continued to live in Oakes, and spent winters in Colorado with family.

Hazel was a member of the Oakes United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, pulling tabs and playing bingo at the American Legion.

She is survived by her two daughters, Lorraine Spears and Nancy (Mickey) Michel; two grandchildren, Corey (Michelle) Michel and Erica (Peter) MacKellar; one great-granddaughter, Madeline; and one brother, Jim (Jan) Featherstone. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald, an infant brother, four brothers and one sister.

Milton Ostby

Milton Ostby, 86, of LaMoure, ND, passed away at home on December 6, 2015.

Milton James, son of Hjalmer and Rose (Rutch) Ostby was born on May 28, 1929. He grew up in the LaMoure area and attended school in Verona and LaMoure. He was united in marriage to Ione Folkestad and together they had six children, Michael, Debbie, Susan, Holly, Linda, Warren. Milton farmed in the LaMoure area up until the time of his death. He also operated a John Deere Salvage business for over 30 years on the farm.

Milton remained active and hard-working in spite of advancing age and some health problems. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ione; five children, Debbie (Glenn) Muske, Bismarck, ND, Susan Ostby, Fargo, ND, Holly Nicholson, Jamestown, ND, Linda (Dominic) Esposito, Simpsonville, SC, and Warren Ostby, Williston, ND; three grandchildren, Erin Muske, Huntsville, TX, Kara (Nate) Welk, Bismarck, and Kenneth Nicholson, Fargo, ND; one great-grandson, Quinton Welk; a second great-grandson yet to be born; and his sister, Margaret Wegenast, Edgeley, ND. Milton was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael.

Doris Loepp

Doris Loepp, 84, of Oakes, ND, passed away December 9, 2015, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.

Doris Marie, the youngest child of William and Anna (Burrow) Kunrath was born on March 6, 1931at Guelph, ND. She attended Guelph School before finishing her junior and senior years at Oakes High School. She married Robert “Bud” Loepp on July 6, 1950 in Aberdeen, SD. Together they had two children, Fae and Johnnie. Doris was employed with Northwestern Bell at Oakes and Wahpeton for 17 years. When the office closed, she went to work for D. and E. Machining, Inc. until retiring in June 1993. Bud passed away on May 10, 2012, and Doris moved to Oakes to be closer to family. She loved family history and her favorite pastime was anything to do with geneology, knitting and crocheting.

She is survived by her daughter, Fae Rowe and special friend, Larry Chelgren of Oakes; four grandchildren, Nicole (Jason) Wardien, Amber (Shay) Nelson, Michael Loepp, and Amanda Loepp; four great-grandchildren, Abby, Aiden, Leah, and Jaren; and a special friend, Bob Dickerson. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert “Bud”, son Johnnie, brother Clarence Kunrath, two sisters Lorraine Baker and Arlene Kunrath, and a son-in-law, Jim Rowe.

William Klaudt

William KlaudtWilliam “Bill” Klaudt, a long-time Jamestown College professor, died Thursday evening, December 10, 2015 at Sanford Palliative Care, Fargo, ND at the age of 85.

Bill was born November 7, 1930, in Menno, South Dakota, the son of William and Olga (Dannenbring) Klaudt, Sr. He grew up and attended school in Menno, graduating from Menno High School. He graduated from the University of South Dakota – Springfield, received his Master’s Degree from Black Hills State University, and also did graduate work at Denver University, Syracuse University, University of Rhode Island and Georgetown University. Bill married Dolores Holleman on August 28, 1956, in Springfield, South Dakota.

Bill was a Professor and Chairman of the Business Administration Department at Jamestown College for 27 years, retiring in 1994 as Professor Emeritus. He was honored by the student body in 1970-71 by being selected as the Professor of the Year. Before that he was a business teacher at Rapid City Central High School and Black Hills State University. He also was the Educational Administrator at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Bill was involved in the management of several family businesses in Menno and Rapid City, and was a co-founder and partner in Business Consultants in Jamestown. In 2006 he was inducted into the Jamestown College Alumni Hall of Fame, the first and only non-alumnus to be inducted.

During the Korean War he served as an Army Battalion Supply Specialist in Germany, 1952-54. While in Rapid City he was Chairman of the Board of Elders, Congregational President, and Chairman of the Long Range Planning Committee at Zion Lutheran Church. Bill was also Director of the Missouri Lutheran Church Synod’s South Dakota District Mission Program for several years. At Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown he served on the Church Council, was Chairman of the United Mission Appeal and along with his wife organized and directed 9 Adult Bible Study and Fellowship Groups. He served as a lay pastor in both communities.

His favorite pastimes were camping, photography, and traveling throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe with his wife, Dolores, and sons. He also enjoyed all Jamestown College and Pro Sports. However, his greatest joy came in watching the potential within others being realized. Upon his retirement from Jamestown College in 1994 he gave freely of his time and talent in volunteer work as a SCORE Consultant, Jamestown Community Foundation Board member, Chairman of the Investment Committee for the Foundation, and other services.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores; son, Kent Klaudt, San Francisco, CA; brother, Doug (Donna) Klaudt, Seattle, WA; brother-in-law, Harvey (Annette) Holleman, Eden Prairie, MN; sister-in-law, Marlene (Holleman) and Jim Dahm, Pella, IA; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Kraig Klaudt, São Paulo, Brazil.

Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with Pastor Kristi Weber officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, December 14, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel.

Interment: Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.

Robert was born June 12, 1951, in California, the son of George and Olive (Wald) Drake. He worked various jobs and eventually settled in Jamestown, North Dakota.

The funeral service for Erna M. Wagner, 95, Valley City, ND formerly of Mandan, ND will be 11 am Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with Rev. Lee Herberg officiating.  Burial will be in the ND Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan.  She died Thursday, December 17, at the Sheyenne Care Center, Valley City.

Visitation will be 2-5 pm Monday at the Sheyenne Care Center and one hour before the service at the church.

Erna is the mother of Karen (Brian) Enge, Valley City.

Jacob “Jake” Dosch

Jake DoschJacob Phillip (Jake) Dosch, beloved husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, brother, friend to so many, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 18.

Jake was born in Emmons County, ND, on May 24, 1931. Jake grew up on the family farm near Strasburg, ND, and graduated from Saint Benedict’s (Emmons County) High School in Strasburg in 1950. After briefly attending Valley City State University he enlisted in the US Navy.

Jake had a 30 year career with JC Penney which took him from Bismarck to Montana, Nebraska, Colorado and then happily back to North Dakota when the family moved to Valley City in 1975. After retiring from JC Penney in 1983 he worked in real estate for the following 31 years, retiring in December 2014.

In his 40 happy years in Valley City, Jake was active in Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, V-500 at the college, REACH and Knights of Columbus at St. Catherine’s Church, the Country Club, and the Barnes County Historical Society Museum. Jake and Lucy were beloved Associates of Maryvale and loved playing cards with friends they’ve known through the decades.

Jake was a man of deep faith with an immense love for his family, church and community. He enjoyed friendships and grandchildren, a love of the Knights of Columbus, North Dakota, history, postcards and puzzles.

Jake and Lucy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 7, 2015. He is survived by his children, Susan Olson (Dean), Henry, SD, Laura Nygard (Todd), Williston, ND, Sandra Fearing (Mitch), Williston, ND, Robert Dosch (Karen), Grand Forks, ND, and Jerald Dosch (Dixie), Saint Paul, MN; his grandchildren, Christopher, Rachel, Stuart, Mollie, Vance, Marcus, Mallory, Benjamin, Emily, Wesley, Katherine, Lauren, Ian, Aidan, Ava and Lucy; his brothers and sisters Helen, Ed, Rose, John (Jake’s twin), Tony and Sally. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy, his parents Sebastian and Veronica (Shoemaker) Dosch, and his brother Adam.

His Funeral Mass will be held at St. Catherine’s Church on Tuesday, December 22 at 10:30 am. Visitation will be at St. Catherine’s on Monday from 5 to 7 pm. Prayer service will be at 7 pm. Rosary will be prayed at 6:45 for those who wish to join the family. Burial with military rites will be at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Valley City immediately after the funeral.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to the ND Knights of Columbus Foundation or Catholic HeaIth Initiative Health at Home (Valley City hospice). Larry Himmerich

Larry HimmerichLarry Leroy Himmerich, 75, Jamestown, North Dakota, passed away December 20, 2015 at home surrounded by family and under the care of hospice after battling cancer.

Larry was born on October 16, 1940 at Bismarck, ND to Philip and Christine (Everding) Himmerich.  He grew up on farms in Napoleon, Burnstad, and Hannaford, ND.  He moved to Jamestown in 1956 where he met his wife Mary (Bly) and they were married on August 8, 1966 in Jamestown.  They lived in West Fargo where their son Charles (Chuck) was born and Valley City where their daughter Kristine (Kristi) was born. They lived briefly in Nebraska and then they moved back to Jamestown in 1972 and lived there until his death.

Larry’s main occupation was various construction work throughout the years.  He worked for Everett’s Construction in Jamestown for many years.  He spent some time working for his brother, Donald, putting up large power lines in Texas.  He also drove a concrete truck in Jamestown and, right before retiring, delivered the Jamestown Sun newspaper.

Larry’s biggest passion in life was stock car racing.  He started racing with his cousin Harry Himmerich in 1967 and continued on and off until 2003.  He shared this passion with his son, Chuck, and they took turns being each other’s pit man throughout the years.  The years Larry didn’t race he attended the races faithfully.  His favorite event was the Annual Stock Car Stampede in Jamestown that he attended every year either as a driver or a spectator.  Larry also enjoyed watching NASCAR, the Twins, and the Vikings.  Larry enjoyed his cat, Rascal, that he raised from birth.  And he also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary; son Chuck, Jamestown; daughter, Kristi (John) Morgan, Barnesville, MN; two grandchildren, Jacob and Kylie Morgan, Barnesville, MN; sister, DeLila Everson, Mesa, AZ; brother, Edwin Himmerich, Stanfield, OR. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Irene Eslinger and Loretta Eslinger; three brothers, Lawrence Himmerich, Donald Himmerich, and Charles Himmerich; and two brothers and one sister who died in infancy. Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 28, 2015 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Jamestown with Pastor Eric Weber officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, December 27, 2015 at Williams-Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown.

Interment: Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown.

Del Creviston

Del CrevistonDel Creviston, age 76, of Valley City, ND, was called to his true home in heaven on December 20, 2015 while on vacation in Boise, ID. He was blessed to have many family and friends that will greatly miss his warm smile, his signature wink, and his caring attitude towards every life he touched. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 1:00 PM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday evening at the church.

Delloy “Del” Creviston was born on May 6, 1939 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada to Ruth and Lloyd Creviston. In 1958 he graduated from Grafton High School, where he met the love of his life, Mary Ellen; they married on September 17th, 1961. He and Mary were blessed to have four children, Pamela Mae, David Gary, Cindy Kae, and Sandra Rae. Del worked for both the Temple Co. and Gamble Store in Grafton, ND and then worked in Grand Forks, ND, finally taking his career to Pamida at Valley City. After his tour at that he became the manager of the Eagles Club and ended his retail career as manager of Budget Home Furnishing in Valley City, ND. He was very involved in Eagles Club where both he and Mary found friendship and community. They both took turns as President, and were named Mr. and Mrs. Eagle. Del was involved in starting the North Star Classic. He served in the National Guard from 1958-1962. He was also a valued member of the Optimist Club, VFW, and a devoted member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. Del greatly enjoyed life and was known for taking his family on many state park camping trips with the family camper. He could also be found in the outdoors hunting. He enjoyed using this time to bond with his son, son-in-laws and grandsons. Del also loved to fish, he was a wonderful story teller and knew a thing or two and a fish story. Many of his grandchildren will remember him for teaching them a thing or two about fishing, and the secret song that also brought the fish to “grandpa’s line”. Del had many friends and family to meet him as he passed, including his mother and step-father Ruth and Lloyd, his grandchild Amanda Kae, and many friends.

Although he had many to welcome him to his home in heaven, he has many who will miss his presence here in this life including his wife Mary; his four children, Pamela (Mark) and their children Alex and Conner; David (Connie) and their children Jordan, Zach and Tanner; Cindy (Roger) and their children Amanda (who met her grandfather with a cold Diet Coke in heaven) and Addison; and Sandra with her children Jeff, Natalie and Savanna. He and Mary have three great-grandchildren, Laney, Keegan and Liam.

Marian NelsenMarian Nelsen, age 91, of Valley City, ND, died Tuesday, December 22nd at her residence under Mercy Hospice in Valley City. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, December 28th at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Valley City. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Lerud Schuldt Funeral Home and one hour before the service on Monday afternoon at the church. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery near Valley City in the spring.

Marian Charlotte Monson, the daughter of Carl and Martha (Olstad) Monson, was born October 26, 1924 on the family farmstead near Kathryn, ND. Marian attended a one room school house perched on a hilltop along the Kathryn Road where the frame is still standing today. The family later moved to Valley City where Marion attended and graduated from College High with Honors in 1942. Marion then worked as a bookkeeper at the Fair Store in Valley City for Karl J. Olson from 1942 until 1950. She met the love of her life while working at the Fair Store, Ernest Martin Nelsen. The couple was introduced by Ernest’s brother Gordon Nelsen and his girlfriend Emma Monson. Gordon and Emma were married first and Ernest and Marian were in their wedding party. On May 14, 1950 Marian and Ernest were married in Valley City. The couple built the house they both lived in until the time of their deaths in Valley City. Marian and Ernest were very talented gardeners, and raised many flowers that took trophies at flower shows. The couple also raised over 50 different varieties of Roses. Marian cooked everything from scratch, no mixes, and made all of the clothes for their two daughters. Ernest and Marian were very proud of their two girls that they had adopted, and being involved with all of their families activities. They also traveled together to all lower 50 states. Marian and Ernest were always together, if you saw one, you usually saw both. Marian’s favorite title was that of Grandma to her grandchildren, it always brought such a smile to her face to see them all. Ernest passed away on December 31, 2012; part of Marian passed away that day too.

Marian is survived by her two daughters, Debbie (Darren) Horter, Grand Forks, ND and Cynthia (Thomas) Tatom, Valley City, ND; grandchildren, Martha Quanbeck, Alexandra and Marissa Sullivan, all Grand Forks, ND, and Jennifer (Marshall) Heitzmann, Valley City, ND; great grandchildren Piper Anglebrandt, Charlee Sullivan and Alexis and Gracie Heitzmann; a very special friend, Elizabeth “Beth” Oppegaard, Jamestown, ND; one sister in law, Della Johnson; many nieces and cousins; and close neighbors, Dorothy Hegdahl and Janice and O’Neil Oppegaard.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, many aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents.

Arlon Rott

Arlon RottArlon Rott, 78, of Nortonville, ND, passed away at his home Tuesday evening, December 22, 2015 of a sudden heart attack.

Arlon Rott was born September 3, 1937, in McIntosh County, near Fredonia, ND, to Samuel and Maggie (Herman) Rott. In 1942, they moved to a farm northwest of Nortonville and in 1951, they moved into Nortonville where he attended and graduated from high school in 1955. In 1959, he married Rhodell Kay Washburn. They purchased a farm north of Nortonville where their home has been since.

Arlon farmed in the Nortonville area and did construction work with his brother, Virgil, for the LaMoure and Stutsman County Soil Conservation District building roads, water dugouts, dams and field drainage. He also worked seven years as a pilot and gunner for the United States Dept. of Agriculture “Animal Damage Control” of Bismarck, ND.

Arlon also raised show quality Pomeranian dogs with his second wife, Jane. Some dogs won championship honors in California and British of Columbia, Canada.

His favorite and cherished saying was, “We have come a long way you and me.”

Arlon is survived by his wife, Jane Kulla and her five children and eight grandchildren; daughter, Cindy (Larry) Worrel; son, Robert (Linda) Rott; daughter, Diane (Steve) Buckeye; son, Paul (Jane) Rott; ten grandchildren, Emily, Samantha, Kyle, Justin, Lucas, Jennifer, Megan, Grace, Peyton and Frank; two great-grandchildren, Keely and Alise; and numerous Pomeranians.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; great grandchild, Lauren; and brother, Virgil.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley, ND with Rev. Becky Holten officiating.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.

Interment: Nortonville Cemetery, Nortonville, ND.

Duane “Doc” Brown

Duane "Doc" BrownDuane “Doc” Brown, age 81, of Valley City, ND, died Friday, December 25th at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City.  A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 31st at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Valley City.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church and one hour before the service on Thursday morning.  A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the church.  Inurnment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Valley City in the spring.

V. Duane Brown, the son of Vernon and Bernice (Hiles) Brown, was born September 1, 1934 in Estherville, IA.  Doc grew up and attended school in the Estherville area.  After his graduation, Doc served his country in the US Army.  On October 15, 1957 he married Bonnie J. Fitzloff in Spencer, IA.  Doc worked for General Mills for a time before enrolling in Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA.  After his graduation, he and Bonnie moved to Valley City where he opened his private practice in 1966.  Doc practiced in Valley City until his retirement in 2006.  He was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, the Valley City Rotary Club, and the El Zagal Shriners.  Doc served as President of the North Dakota Chiropractic Association and served on its Board of Directors.  Doc and Bonnie spent many summers traveling in their motor home with their dog Brandi.  He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting deer, antelope and bear.

Duane is survived by his wife Bonnie, Valley City, ND; daughters Kim (Barry) Diemert, Ellendale, ND, Lori (Rick) Anderson, West Fargo, ND and Jill (Brad) Bushaw, Bismarck, ND; one son, Jeff Brown, Valley City, ND; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bob and his sister-in-law Mary.

James Richard Ziemba, the son of Jacob and Adyline (Triebold) Ziemba, was born September 15, 1948 in Valley City, ND.  James grew up and attended school in Tower City, ND and graduated from Tower City High School.  James attended Dakota Business School and also Valley City State University.  On May 6, 1968 he enlisted with the US Army and served his country during Viet Nam.  James was Honorably Discharged on April 7, 1970.  On January 18, 1975 he married Lenora Boen in Kathryn, ND.  James worked for a time at the Tower City Truck Stop and later moved to Valley City.  While in Valley City, he worked at Geisler Implement, Beyer Cement, and Perkins for many years until his retirement in 2013.  James was recently working for the Window Man in Valley City.

James is survived by his wife Lenora, Valley City, ND; two sons, John Ziemba, Valley City, ND and Timothy (Alicia) Ziemba, Fargo, ND; his Grandson and Best Buddy, Kayson; one brother, Richard (Judy) Ziemba, Apache Junction, AZ; three sisters, Jaci Hostetler, Missoula, MT, Shirley Ziemba, Valley City, ND and Bonnie Sorenson, Omak, WA.

James was preceded in death by his parents, one son Eric and one sister Kathleen.
